Catoctin High School recently received the prestigious National Banner Recognition from Special Olympics North America, honoring its commitment to fostering inclusion, advocacy, and respect within its student body. This recognition was awarded to Catoctin High for meeting 10 national standards of excellence, further emphasizing the importance of creating an inclusive environment for all students, especially those with special needs.
Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) Superintendent Dr. Cheryl L. Dyson praised the achievement, stating, “We are so proud of Catoctin High earning this national honor. All students should have the ability to excel and enjoy physical education activities, and our schools are proud to choose to include students in activities.” This statement highlights the significance of inclusive education and its role in promoting equality and engagement across the school system.
Catoctin High is now part of an elite group of schools within the FCPS system that have earned this recognition, joining Twin Ridge Elementary and Tuscarora High. In addition to this, several other schools in the district, including Urbana High, Gov. Thomas Johnson High, and Tuscarora High, have earned the 2024 Special Olympics Maryland Unified Champion School status.
Special Olympics Maryland has been a longstanding partner with FCPS, offering students valuable opportunities to participate in physical activities that promote inclusion and social engagement. Currently, over 250 schools in Maryland are involved in the Special Olympics Unified Champion programming, ensuring that students of all abilities can thrive both academically and socially.
